It’s 3am and you’re awake. Again.
Your little angel was beautifully settled in a peaceful slumber just 30 minutes ago, so what’s changed?
And so, the guessing (and double guessing) game begins…
Are they too hot or too cold? Do they need more layers or less? And what about those Tog ratings on sleep sacks?
Never fear moms, we’ve got your back. Here’s our top tips for keeping baby perfectly comfortable throughout the night. No matter what the weather.
A baby’s room should be between 60°F and 68°F, but if you want to get specific, 64.4°F is ‘just right…
It’s tricky to gauge this by feel, so it’s best to pop a room thermometer in your baby’s nursery, so you can tell at a glance if the room is too chilly or too warm.
When you purchase an ergoPouch organic cotton sheeting sleep sack or sleep suit, you’ll receive a free room thermometer, so you can accurately check your nursery’s temperature.
To check your baby’s body temperature, simply place your hand on their chest, tummy or back. This is the best way to feel if they are too hot or too cold, rather than feeling their hands or feet as often your baby’s feet or hands will actually feel cooler than their core temperature.
A baby who’s too warm may have damp hair or be sweaty, flushed and have a fast pulse. In this case, remove a layer of clothing and you can even try moving your baby to another room that’s a bit cooler.
A baby who’s too cold may not want to feed, may become lethargic and difficult to wake.
There are warnings that a baby being too hot or too cold can increase the risk of SIDS. It’s so important to dress your baby correctly to accommodate the temperature of their room while they’re sleeping.
Dressing your baby appropriately
One of the best ways to ensure your baby can regulate their body temperature while they’re asleep is to dress them in breathable, natural fibers, like cotton, bamboo and merino which all promote an even and comfortable appropriate body temperature while slumbering.
If you choose the correct, Tog-rated swaddle or sleeping bag, your baby won’t need extra blankets.
ErgoPouch baby swaddles, sleep sacks and sleep suits are a great choice when it comes to correctly dressing your baby for sleep. In addition to the quality, organic fabrics which come in a range of adorable prints, our products also allow babies to move freely, with ergonomically shaped designs and stretch insert fabrics.
Still confused? Rest easy. We’ve created a temperature chart to help moms and dads choose the best Tog rated sleep sack for your little ones – as well as what to put underneath. Long sleeves, or short sleeves? Vest or no vest? We’ve got the answers for you.
What is a Tog rating?
We hear a lot about Tog ratings when it comes to baby sleep wear. But do you know what it really is? And how does it affect your baby?
Basically, when we give sleep wear a Tog rating, we’re measuring the warmth of a sleeping bag, swaddle or sleep suit, so you know which one best suits the season and situation. The smaller the Tog number, the cooler, or lighter, the sleeping bag. The higher the Tog, the warmer the sleeping bag.
ErgoPouch has sleeping bags starting at 0.3 Tog – which is the lightest weight summer sleep sack. The warmest is the ergoPouch winter sleeping bag, which is rated at a cozy 3.5 Tog. There are also ergoPouch sleeping bags of varying Togs in between, which are perfect for fall and spring – or to suit the warmer states where temperatures don’t drop as much as they do elsewhere.
We’re here to make choosing the right sleeping garment for your baby that little bit easier. Take a look at the guide below, to help you find the perfect ergoPouch sleep wear combination for your baby.
